Not every person who visits an animal shelter is there to get the animal most in need of a home. Most people go to find that perfect pet…but not Melani Andrews. No, Melani was a dedicated dog rescuer looking for a dog in need of rescuing, the dog who needed her most.

RELATED STORY:

And that’s how she met her Jake, her forever companion.

One day, Melani walked into the shelter asking for “the oldest, hardest to adopt dog.” You see, the 72-year-old grandmother had recently lost her husband and shortly after that, her Staffordshire terrier who was a great comfort to her after she lost her husband.

According to the shelter’s Facebook page, “Jake has been with us for a long time, is a senior and has cancer in addition to skin problems. He was getting passed up time and time again. But Melani came to the shelter not just to find a great dog, but to save a life and give unconditional love to a dog in need.”1

RELATED STORY:

And that’s exactly what she did; she didn’t even mind that adopting Jake would mean many vet bills for the 12-year-old aging dog with terminal skin cancer, who was deaf and partially blind.

Melani is thrilled to have Jake. She says, “Every day I laugh a little bit more. It’s not so lonesome. I think [Jake] knows that I love him because he’ll come over to me and he’ll rub up against me and ask me to rub his backside. And then he’ll nose me with his nose. And a dog that doesn’t know somebody loves him wouldn’t be doing anything like that.”2

Here at HNN, we love animals and we love stories like this. Hearing that someone truly wants to rescue the unlovable kinda restores your hope in mankind, doesn’t it?

And just in case you needed one more good cry, check out the video below about another woman and the dog who she rescued (or who rescued her).
