It took me a few days to write this story on Steve Meyerowitz aka “Sproutman”, as I’d been fortunate enough to talk with this amazing man, vegan, and author on a few separate occasions and it’s no secret—I was a fan.

He’d been featured on local and national news and was loved by many. Our heart goes out to his friends and family. This article does say he was 59 while a few others say he was 65. Either way he will be missed by so many, including me.

From the article:

Author and nutritionist Steve Meyerowitz, 59, was killed Wednesday night when the car he was driving collided with a pickup truck on Route 7 in Falls Village, Connecticut, the Berkshire Eagle reported.

Meyerowitz, known as Sproutman, was pronounced dead at Sharon Hospital in Sharon, CT after he was transported from the crash site. The driver of the pickup truck, a Torrington man, was treated for internal injuries and later transported to Hartford Hospital.

Meyerowitz became known as ‘Sproutman’ after a New York City reporter who interviewed him was amazed by the impressive array of sprouts and herbs he grew for his own use. Adopting the Sproutman moniker he started a natural foods business in New York City in 1977, after he began experimenting with veganism as a child. The young Meyerowitz suffered from often debilitating allergies and health issues, and found by eating no meat or animal related foods his physical condition improved.

It should be pointed out that Sproutman would say a one size diet wouldn’t fit all. So many health experts will claim that their diet works for everyone, but he was bright and humble enough not to make that claim. Each and every one of us is different. There is no denying his great attitude, good health and zest for life and we here at Health Nut News know the world will not be the same without him. Rest in peace.
