Single-use plastic has become a huge burden on not only our earth but our oceans and their inhabitants, as well. And while people have created eco-friendly alternatives to plastic straws like metal, they aren’t biodegradable.

However, one new rather innovative solution that’s recently popped up is a straw made out of grass that only grows in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, called Lepironia articulata. The grass grows wild in the wetlands and is long with a hollow stem.

Check out the process below:

If you are in Vietnam, the grass straws made by Ong Hut Co. come either ‘fresh’ or ‘dry’ versions; freshly cut straws can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks and in room temperature for up to a week,1 if not being used.

These cool straws are not treated with any chemicals or preservatives and have been said to have a  mild and pleasant natural fragrance.1
