After seeing California and Washington state (Props 37 and 522) fail to label GMO’s, finally the state of Vermont got it right.
Under this new law, any food sold for retail sale that is “entirely or partially produced with genetic engineering” must be labeled as such by July 2016.
From the article:
“Vermonters take our food and how it is produced seriously, and we believe we have a right to know what’s in the food we buy,” said Gov. Peter Shumlin. “More than 60 countries have already restricted or labeled these foods, and now one state — Vermont — will also ensure that we know what’s in the food we buy and serve our families.”
I know many people hope that the public will open their eyes and not need labeling, but I think this is a step in the right direction. I hope other states will follow suit…. and soon.
