Valerie Harper, beloved TV icon, has died. She passed away on Friday after an extended illness. Harper was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009. Then, in March 2013, she revealed that she had developed leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a condition in which cancer cells invade the tissue protecting the brain and spinal cord.

Harper played one of TV’s most popular and enduring characters, the constantly dating, constantly dieting Rhoda Morgenstern, for nearly a decade starting in 1970. She won four Emmy Awards.

Her brave spirit throughout her illness was an inspiration to all. Harper said, upon learning of her terminal diagnosis:

“More than anything I’m living in the moment. I really want Americans and all of us to be less afraid of death… don’t go to the funeral before the day of the funeral. While you’re living, live.”

Valerie Harper was 80 years old. Rest in peace.
