VIDEO with lyrics and Bowie’s Space Oddity

Rest in Peace David Bowie

An icon and hero has left planet Earth today.

David Bowie’s rep confirmed that he has died after an 18 month battle with cancer, two days after his 69th birthday.

The singer only released his latest album Blackstar on his birthday – this past Friday.

My heart goes out to his family, friends and the whole wide world…

This afternoon I wrote to a family members of one of the holistic doctors who passed away.

I told her, “I have that feeling again”.

For some time I’d gotten that feeling before one had died. I’ve never shared that publicly, but my own family and better half saw it happen more than once.

Today it was so strong I even found myself weepy (that doesn’t happen often) and in a dense fog (and it was foggy here in Florida quite literally for days, which is odd).

Thankfully it wasn’t a doctor who died, but a hero of mine…

Bowie has been a huge influence on me since I was a small child.

As a musician/music major in school and as a human being with ears I couldn’t help but be in awe of his immense talent.

He was one of the first dozen shows I saw live. As a mere teen I saved up my money for a second row seat at Deer Creek Theatre, on June 12, 1990, where I watched him in awe. His live performances were some of the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen over 2,000 bands in my 40 something years.

I can hardly write right now but I feel as if the lyrics to his song (written before I was born) are pertinent in this moment so I’ll listen to it until I fall asleep tonight.

Dearest David Bowie- you will be missed by legions of fans of so many ages.

We love you.

This was the song I asked to be played at my own funeral some day… how ironic. I even stated that I wished he could sing the song at my funeral. I thought he was immortal and would outlive us all.

“Space Oddity”

Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills
and put your helmet on Ground Control to Major Tom
Commencing countdown,
engines on
Check ignition
and may God’s love be with you[spoken]
Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One, LiftoffThis is Ground Control
to Major Tom
You’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it’s time to leave the capsule
if you dareThis is Major Tom to Ground Control
I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating
in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different todayFor here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can doThough I’m past
one hundred thousand miles
I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much
she knowsGround Control to Major Tom
Your circuit’s dead,
there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you….Here am I floating
round my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do.
