On Sunday, October 6th, a Marco real estate agent and property owner were caught on camera putting poisonous moth balls into an owl burrow on Marco Island.

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission’s law enforcement staff were called and are investigating this incident as a felony crime. The person in the video has been identified and contacted by state law enforcement.

The owl burrow is located at 1430 Wayne Ave. and was investigated by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission after the incident was reported.

According to a press release from Audubon of the Western Everglades, the owls survived, and one is being banded for research by the organization.

The attack on the state-threatened burrowing owls follows others reported earlier this year of contractors dumping dirt and other material on top of owl burrows.
