(Editor’s note: This documentary (it’s free to watch- click here) explains why this is happening and how the opioid industry is growing desperate. But, there’s a solution and it’s cheap and natural.)
On the same day that the President declared the opioid crisis a nationwide public health emergency, the Department of Justice announced it had arrested Insys Therapeutics founder John Kapoor, 74, in Phoenix and charged him with using “bribes and fraud to prop up sales of a pain medication called Subsys, a fentanyl spray typically used to treat cancer patients suffering excruciating pain.” 1 His arrest comes almost a year after “former Insys CEO Michael Babich and five other onetime executives were arrested as part of an alleged ‘nationwide conspiracy.’”2
The Justice Department claims that Kapoor and other Insys executives offered bribes in the form of kickbacks to doctors who wrote massive amounts of prescriptions for patients- many of whom did not have cancer. The DOJ also alleged that the executives defrauded insurers by forming a “reimbursement unit” dedicated to obtaining prior authorization from insurers who were reluctant to pay for the drug.3 Disgusting. Essentially, the Insys execs fueled the opioid epidemic by paying doctors to prescribe a drug they KNEW was both extremely dangerous and addictive.
