People Playing ‘Pokémon Go’ Save Dozens Of Abandoned Animals!

If you don’t know what this game is (how you missed the news is beyond me but trust me, you’re lucky) you probably don’t have kids. At all…because even teenagers are playing this silly new app. However, it IS getting them outside and walking around. Yes, they are accidentally interruping funerals, walking into the road…ok, so maybe this game is just evil. But, for some pets left in cages- out in the blazing sun- I’m sure they coujld care less.

Just last week, Sara Perez and Matthew Teague went to their local park in Houston, Texas, in the hopes of finding some Pokémon they could “catch” with their phones. What they found instead were dozens of small pets, with no owner in sight, who needed someone to save them.

“[We] saw a strange box on the ground [and] said box had a cage in it and inside were hamsters abandoned in the heat with no water and birdseed for food and they were close to dying!” Perez wrote in a Facebook post. “They had pinkies [baby mice] they were trying to keep from dying and most of them were suffering from heat exhaustion!”

The two called out for an owner but no one appeared. So, rather than leave them out to die in the Texas sun, they took them home and gave them food and water.

Thankfully, all of the 27 abandoned animals survived but now need loving homes. To help that process, Perez turned to her friends on the Pokémon Go: Houston community Facebook page, asking if anyone was interested in helping. So far, four of the hamsters have been adopted and she plans to get help from the Houston SPCA to find homes for the rest.

“Interestingly, this isn’t the first pet rescue that’s been facilitated in part by the viral game. In recent days, two other Pokémon Go users in Houston found and rescued an injured puppy they might have otherwise missed if it weren’t for the app inspiring them to walk through a park.”

Obviously, there are some negatives about this game BUT it appears there are also some amazing positives. If you are going to play the game, stay safe and keep your eyes open and up- you never know what you might find!
