Display of 6 flavor varieties of KIND Bar

FDA give smack down to snack saying a nutritious NON GMO bar made with high fat nuts can’t say they’re “healthy” but those “meals” in the frozen dept we all know as “Healthy Choice” can?  You’ve GOT to be kidding me!

Grrr….

This might not make you angry, but it makes my blood boil.

FDA demands Kind Bar remove “healthy” from label

The FDA does a “smack down on the snack” the Kind Bar (as the NPR puts it) So why is a bar made with high fat nuts unhealthy!?  (Experts say it’s not, the FDA is just a delusional organization who should be called the Food and THUG administration and bends over backwards (or just bends OVER) for the pharmaceutical companies while we, the taxpayers, pay their sorry salaries.
From the article on NPR.com

It turns out the FDA has a very specific definition of “healthy” food and a list of requirements that products must meet to earn the right to put that loaded word on the label. For one, the product has to contain 1 gram or less of saturated fat.

According to the letter, there were four flavors of Kind bar that were not up to snuff when the agency reviewed them in August 2014. For example, the Kind Fruit & Nut Almond & Coconut product contained 5 grams of saturated fat per 40 grams of the food.

As William Correll, the director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and author of the letter, writes, “None of your products listed above meet the requirements for use of the nutrient content claim ‘healthy,’ even though the Kind label reads ‘Healthy and tasty, convenient and wholesome.’ ”

The FDA takes issue with many other aspects of the labels, including Kind’s use of the plus sign on some of its products, which it uses to designate bars with extra antioxidants, fiber or protein.

Technically, to bear the symbol or word “plus,” the bar has to contain 10 percent more of the nutrients than a bar the FDA has deemed representative of the snack bar category.

The good news is NPR actually interviewed an expert who said how outdated (and out of touch I might add!) the FDA’s info (and brains) actually are!

Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard University, says it’s not as though Kind’s mislabeling is egregious. “You wouldn’t want a product that’s loaded with mostly palm oil and other sources of saturated fat [to be labeled healthy],” he says.

Willett has researched how nuts contribute to human health, and he tells The Salt that they reduce LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) and lower rates of heart disease and mortality. “They’re probably one of the healthiest choices you can make in a diet,” he says.

Willett says that the FDA’s letter to Kind is based on outdated guidelines, at least when it comes to nuts. The government updates its Dietary Guidelines for Americans every five years, and the latest report from the advisory committee for those guidelines does indeed point to research supporting the inclusion of nuts in a healthful diet.

But the FDA seems to be lagging, in part because the agency doesn’t revise its guidelines as frequently. “I think there’s wide consensus that nuts are a healthy food,” Willett says.

Wow the FDA’s “Food and Safety Center” could not be MORE out of touch. They are an embarrassment to Americans everywhere and it’s no surprise so many Americans are obese while scarfing down low fat frozen food (I won’t even go into my opinion on the frozen brand Healthy Choice- but I’d rather eat dirt from the ground than touch their food)  but a nutritious non GMO bar made with coconut and high fat nuts (very nutritious as the experts said above) cannot even mention they are healthy on the label?  A complete and utter joke.

Kind Bar says they will change the label now, but I hope the FDA knows they won’t shut down a company making nutritious food. They can threaten them, send them letters, make them change their labels but people will keep buying them. People will see the truth and while the FDA tries to shove more prescriptions down our throats and is nothing but  a lap dog for the drug companies, it’s disgusting what bullies they are for a HEALTHY nutritious bar (which is one of the few ‘snacks’ one can buy on the road or on the go that is good for them (and all are gluten free non gmo and all but one are Vegan (blueberry has honey)  Shame on you FDA. You didn’t start out this way. Your founder had good intentions but you’ve seriously turned into a sold out corrupt group of bullies who I hope will be shut down forever one day while I’m still on this Earth.
