On Thursday the El Paso Department of Public Health announced that an El Paso woman in her mid-20s, who had not only been vaccinated against the influenza virus but was otherwise healthy, died from influenza.
Fernando Gonzalez, the Lead Epidemiologist said,
“This very difficult news to deal with, as is any loss of life. The only thing that could make this even worse is if our community assumes that this means the vaccine is ineffective, when we know that this is not the case.”1
This poor woman’s family should be infuriated that THAT was Gonzalez’s takeaway. And might want to go back to med school because he’s dead wrong; the flu shot is ineffective. In fact, NBC news recently called it “lousy.” It doesn’t work. And this isn’t the first time, either.
Our heart goes out to her family and friends.
As always, while we won’t be getting the flu shot it’s up to you to decide what’s best for you and your family. And the only way you’re going to be able to figure that out is by doing your research (and we have tons of resources here on the site). No one is going to do it for you.
