This story is truly heartbreaking. An extraordinarily loyal sheepdog has made the national news in Spain after he chased a truck packed full of his beloved herd of sheep, who were headed to a slaughterhouse, down a dangerous highway.

The sheepdog, named Piqué, chased the herd of sheep – which he had loved and taken care of since he was a youthful puppy – for miles down the AP7 motorway in Barcelona.

RELATED STORY:

Piqué was protected by neighborhood police, who shared the tragic story of the canine who “protects his pack until the end” online.

Concerned drivers alerted the police of Piqué pursuing a van down the highway, and thankfully he got away without injury. Sadly, the same can’t be said for his dear flock who went on their way to meet their cruel destiny at the slaughterhouse. Heartbreaking.

RELATED STORY:

The police said that while “animals never cease to surprise us,” they mentioned that guardians must keep their pets safe and use this “beautiful dog” as an example for why we should “make an effort to improve their lives.”1

They teach us many things, some of these things call it instinct. But, in fact, they are qualities that sometimes make our own. If they were humans we would be talking about values,”1 the sincere police proclamation read.

Our heart truly aches for loyal Piqué and his well-protected heard of sheep. Stories like this are a reminder that ALL animals (and in this case Piqué and his herd of sheep) are sentient beings, and they suffer and feel pain just like we do.
