An astounding example of animal cruelty, Chinese street vendors are sealing small fish and amphibians inside of plastic and selling them as “jewelry.”

The trend has been going on for years, but recent attention has brought the public’s eye on board. The Chinese government has been blamed for their lack of law on animal rights.

The pouches cost about $1.50 and contain oxygenated and nutrient-rich water so the animals can breath. They also note that the animals will die after a few days unless they are released and the owner has no obligation to do that.

Though not unique to China, this practice could be considered barbaric.

It is also important to note that making one of these could result in heavy fines or up to three years in jail in Hong Kong.
