I waited five long hours to post this photo and story until I was sure it was true. Huffington Post reported that many thought it was fake, but sadly the photo is very real.

I’m so glad to read that all residents (and the kitty too, we are told!) were safely rescued from the nursing home.

We lost our home in 1991 to a category 4 twister and feel for these folks, many of whom cannot walk more than a few steps without assistance.

We’re still not back in our house 10 months after Hurricane Matthew came ashore here in Florida, but to have this happen to these elderly women is so sad.

From the Huffington Post:

“The residents of La Vita Bella, an assisted living home in Dickinson, Texas, were trapped this weekend when water poured inside, Kim McIntosh, whose mother owns the facility, told the New York Daily News.

Owner Trudy Lampson sent photos of the stranded residents to McIntosh and her husband Timothy, who then posted them to social media, McIntosh said.

“Need help asap emergency services please,” Timothy McIntosh tweeted on Sunday, identifying the facility by name.” 1

When asked why they didn’t evacuate sooner the owner’s daughter said the nursing home had never flooded before.

We are curious why the owner (reportedly in her 70s!) didn’t have more help from her daughter and son in law who were in Florida. She sent them pictures and it could have been far too late. We advise that if you’re in an evacuation area or near a river and the OCEAN like this nursing home- that you get out immediately especially with seniors. Had the water gotten much higher, all of them and the cat could have perished.

If nothing else, since it appears no one cut the power- they could have been electrocuted.

We’ve been through this personally here on the Florida coast and the Midwest and again, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. So glad they’re ok.
