After the last couple of weeks we’ve had around here, I made a promise to myself to get you guys more recipes and more feel good stories like this one…

The Rare Species Fund is a, “…grassroots organization that provides financial support and practical training to in-situ wildlife conservation initiatives. This direct-to-end-user approach places RSF among the world’s most effective conservation agencies. The RSF contributes to those efforts that have shown themselves to be the most viable in real-world conservation of wildlife species populations.

RSF also works closely with various state, federal, and international agencies to help develop sound governmental policies pertaining to conserving and protecting the world’s wildlife. By assuring sustained funding for long-term research and conservation projects, RSF optimizes the prospects for preserving endangered species; for releasing captive animals into suitable, protected habitats; and for expanding awareness of the ties between humans and the natural world,” reports their website.

So, when little Poncho the opossum’s mother died and he found himself all alone, the RSF stepped in to help.

While rescuers “saved” him, he really needed a mother to help him further or his chances of continued survival would be next to zero. And that’s when Hantu, a German Shepherd, stepped into Poncho’s mom’s shoes. The two have since become inseparable.

From the article:

“Opossums are the only New World marsupials and, in the wild, spend the first several months of their lives clinging to their mother’s backs. Having had no puppies of her own, Hantu seems a more than willing foster mum and mode of transportation for Poncho. “

They both play an important role in each other’s lives. In fact, when Hantu goes for her daily walks in the woods, she doesn’t leave the house until Poncho is securely mounted on her back.

Cues the “awwww’s”! Check out this video about the pair:
