Costco Offering Hepatitis A Vaccinations In Wake Of Frozen Berry Mix Recall
(Before I even start writing anything at all– can we just look at the title? I’m honestly shaking my head.)
Canada’s Food Inspection Agency recently had to recall Nature’s Touch Organic Berry Cherry Blend, frozen mix- exclusively sold at Costco- last Saturday. Because there was a possible contamination when the berries were processed, Costco is now offering Hepatitis A vaccinations to anyone who purchased the mix; including, a group of 200 elementary students in a province of Montreal. While doing a health unit, the students were all served smoothies using the mix purchased, by the public health agency, from Costco. The frozen mix is sold exclusively at stores in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Labrador.
Hepatitis A is not life-threatening with most people completely recovering within a few weeks to months (chronic hepatitis can cause progressive damage to the liver, including scarring of the liver leading to cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer). Symptoms can include: inflammation of the liver, low appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, and jaundice– although symptoms are usually mild.
At this time, the Public Health Agency of Canada, is reporting only 13 cases of Hepatitis A directly linked to the product, 3 of them have been hospitalized. There isn’t any additional info though. We don’t know if they are elderly, if they were hospitalized because of dehydration or because it was a more serious case. But–they sure did rush to vaccinate 200 kids against potentially mild symptoms of a non life-threatening disease.
The health department wants people to report their symptoms, throw the product away if they have purchased it (or return it for a free shot and refund at Costco), and then immediately see their health care provider. “The agency says vaccinations can prevent the onset of symptoms if given within two weeks of exposure,” reports CTV News.
Our hearts go out to the parents who no doubt had this thrown in their lap, and may not have even been able to pass on the vaccination. We hope that all the little ones won’t suffer from either Hep A or any side effects of the vax.
