China GMO Campaign

You gotta love the Chinese people. Countless thousands are rioting in the streets of Hong Kong for democracy. And at the same time we have the Chinese government launching an all out PRO GMO campaign to the people of China to stifle any anti GMO sentiment and teach their sheeple…er people… that yes, China, GMO’s are perfectly safe to digest.

China GMO Campaign

From the Scientific American article on GMO stifling (their own words- stifling!)

The agriculture ministry earlier this week announced it would try to educate the public on GMO via TV, newspapers and the Internet.

It hopes to stifle anti-GMO sentiment that has gathered momentum in the wake of incidents such as reports that genetically-modified rice had been illegally sold at a supermarket in the center of the country.

Beijing has been a long-time proponent of GMOs, which it sees as broadly safe and as potentially key in helping feed the world’s largest population.

But critics have alleged the technology could pose health risks, and while China allows imports of some GMO crops it is yet to permit domestic cultivation.

China has imported millions of tons  of GMO soybeans each year for the past decade to feed the world’s largest stock of farmed pigs and to produce around 40 percent of the county’s vegetable oil needs. China consumes around a third of the world’s soybeans, and snaps up roughly 65 percent of all imports each year.

“(We will create) a social atmosphere which is beneficial for the healthy development of the genetically-modified industry,” the agriculture ministry said in a statement.

Sadly we’re par for the course with China who has launched a campaign to let the good people of China know that GMO’s are perfectly safe. Oh, and any mumbo jumbo they might hear that GMO’s aren’t good for them? Total nonsense! Now feed your kids GMO’s (oh wait, I think they’re only allowed one child a piece) and keep quiet and carry on! Gotta love China.

I think that coupled with their animal welfare laws (or lack thereof) I wouldn’t want to eat anything in China.  I have a friend who just moved back after living there for a job and said she’d rather die than go back. That sounds pretty harsh but I’m getting a more clear picture just how hellish it really is in that overpopulated polluted wasteland (unless you’re uber rich of course)

Now don’t get me wrong, I feel for the Chinese people and love them, but the Chinese government? I think I might rather die too than live in a place pretty close to what Orwell had in mind in 1984.  It *almost* makes me thankful for what little freedom we have left here in Americuhh. Land of the free…. sigh.
