Five South Jersey kids were most likely given the incorrect immunizations during a Salem County-sponsored “Shots for Tots” clinic, an audit has found. The worst of the errors being the toddler boy who received excessive dose of a cervical cancer vaccine. The free clinic, which has since been shut down, was operated by the Salem County Health Department at Memorial Hospital of Salem County in Mannington Township.

During the annual audit, officials reviewed 22 patient records and found the irregularities between July 2014 and June 2015. Besides incorrectly vaccinating the five children, the audit also found that $20,000 worth of vaccines had not properly refrigerated- the drugs were thrown away.

One nurse was fired after officials learned the 2-year-old boy had been injected with the excessive dose of Gardasil (the cervical cancer vaccine). While his future is unsure, health officials say he may be at risk of neurological damage. The HPV vaccine is normally given to boys and girls starting at age 9.

Officials will pay for the medical monitoring of the five children.

So sad and infuriating. Our hearts go out to the families who are no doubt rattled.

PS we noticed NBC apparently has changed their headline to make it less dramatic. We wonder if someone stepped in and tried to strong arm them to do that or they did it on their own. We have screen shots of before and after.
