Beyond Meat Inc. has partnered with KFC to try their hand at a plant-based substitute for chicken.

KFC, owned by Yum! Brands Inc., plans to test plant-based nuggets and boneless wings at one of its Atlanta restaurants on August 27. They will offer free samples to customers who purchase other items. KFC said in a statement:

“Customer feedback from the Atlanta test will be considered as KFC evaluates a broader test or potential national rollout.”1

RELATED STORY:

Beyond Meat is already on several restaurant menus across the U.S. and Canada, as the request for plant-based meat substitutes rises. Many chains, like Dunkin’, Tim Hortons, and Carl’s Jr. are all hoping to lure in new diners.

Beyond Meat’s competitor, Impossible Foods Inc., has developed the genetically modified Impossible Whopper with Burger King and sliders for White Castle.

RELATED STORY:

Previously, Beyond Meat’s significant restaurant partnerships have been confined to sausage, burger, and ground-beef substitutes, although the company is also working on bacon. Substitutes for chicken are also catching the attention of large companies. Even large-scale (and inhumane) meat production facilities like Tyson Foods Inc. and Perdue Farms, Inc. have joined in and introduced their questionable versions of meat substitute products.

RELATED STORY:

Shares for Beyond Meat rose as much as 4.9 percent in New York trading on Monday to $153.99. The stock has climbed more than 500 percent since its initial public offering on May 1. Yum shares, which have gained about 27 percent this year, rose as much as 1.1 percent to $116.62.

What are your thoughts? If you live in Atlanta, will you be heading over to KFC today to grab a sample?
