Beginning on Mondy, customers at Whole Foods will notice that prices on popular items have dropped, thanks to what some are calling “the Amazon effect.” (Back in June, Amazon announced it planned to purchase the grocery store chain for $13.7 billion. The acquisition will be completed on Aug. 28.) Also, although everyone will notice the lower prices, eventually Amazon Prime members (which has a $99 annual fee) will enjoy special savings and in-store benefits.

However, immediately,

“Customers will enjoy lower prices on products like Whole Trade bananas, organic avocados, organic large brown eggs, organic responsibly-farmed salmon and tilapia, organic baby kale and baby lettuce, animal-welfare-rated 85% lean ground beef, creamy and crunchy almond butter, organic Gala and Fuji apples, organic rotisserie chicken, 365 Everyday Value organic butter, and much more.”1

Amazon is offering the extra benefits with Prime Membership to attract people to brick and mortar stores and to encourage additional membership sign ups. I already have a Prime membership and love it. I also love Whole Foods. The combo of the two seems like a win win to me. (It will also allow them to strategically place ads online for customers so, not totally altruistic.)
