Dr. Gary Marder of Port St. Lucie, Florida was a trusted doctor. So, when he told his patients they had skin cancer they trusted him and agreed to repeated radiation therapy and surgeries. However, after more than one of his patients got a second opinion from Dr. Ted Schiff, authorities were alerted. As it turns out, the patients coming to Schiff from Marder didn’t have cancer.

We are so grateful to Dr. Schiff for reaching out to the FBI and helping out with what became an investigation against Marder:

“Sometimes we recognize patients just by the sheer number of biopsies done. By the number of procedures and the excessive use of radiation therapy done in an improper manner.

In all my years in the medical field I’ve never seen anything like this. As doctors we take an oath to do no harm.”

Schiff says that in the three to five years that he offered second opinions to Marder’s patients, he constantly saw people with benign conditions like warts or freckles, who had been told they had skin cancer.

The numerous (and unnecessary) cancer treatments added up and eventually resulted in a lawsuit against Marder.

From the article:

“According to the terms of a settlement reached with prosecutors, Marder was ordered to pay $18 million in restitution to the government for the Medicare payments he took for patients who weren’t really ill. However, Marder won’t have to pay the full amount if he comes up with $5.2 million before a set date.

Marder will also have to give the government his vacant lot on Hutchinson Island valued at $650,000. His home, valued at $28 million, is exempt from seizure.”

Shockingly, it appeared Dr. Marder’s medical license has still not been revoked or suspended, despite the lawsuit and prior disciplinary actions that were taken against him. However, we will watch this story and update you as we have additional information.
