On August 26th, 2016, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal council declared a State of Emergency due to the threat and impacts of the Dakota Access pipeline.

From the Pipeline projects website:

“The Dakota Access Pipeline Project is a new approximate 1,172-mile, 30-inch diameter pipeline that will connect the pipeline from  North Dakota to Patoka, Illinois. (They Claim That it’s environmentally friendly )”

So, what does this mean for the tribe and why are they upset? As we have all seen, pipelines sometimes break and when they do- they cause utter devastaion. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe are not willing to take that chance with their land and are hoping other tribes will support them as well.

Standing Rock Tribal Chairman, Dave Archambault II said, “Within our sovereign authority the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe declared a State of Emergency to address the serious nature of the situation [the impacts from the Dakota Access Pipeline]. The tribe will continue to protect our waters, sacred places, and most importantly our children.

Hopefully, many other tribes will call on members of Congress and the White House to OPPOSE the Army Corps of Engineers easement request. Currently, the paperwork has been filed for the easement but it’s still under review.
